From Development “Aid” to Development “Cooperation”: Emerging Donors and New Partnership Models in a Changing Global Landscape

The global landscape is changing, in a world where hundreds of millions have risen out of extreme poverty in recent decades with the emergence of a global middle class, and developing countries are asserting more autonomy over their development agendas. In this context, countries from the Global South are increasingly working together to assist each other in solving development challenges through South-South Cooperation, most notably in Latin America, and so-called “emerging donors” are taking an ever-more prominent role in shaping international development policy on the world stage. This changing reality requires new partnership models, such as Triangular Cooperation, that do away with the traditional donor-recipient aid relationships and move towards more horizontal, collaborative exchanges that strengthen and rely on developing-country leadership and expertise.

Come join the Posner Center for a presentation by Ryan Flanders, who will give an overview of these emerging donors, discuss South-South and Triangular Cooperation and their potential impact on development effectiveness, and consider lessons to be learned from these trends and their possible implications for the non-profit development community.

While most of our attention will be focused on actors from the Global South, a brief overview of multilateral, European, and other traditional donor agencies from the Global North will also be given in order to provide an introductory yet complete picture of who’s-who in the international development community.

This is to support the ultimate goal of the event, which is to encourage organizations to learn from different global perspectives on development practice that may challenge their approach, and look beyond U.S. borders when seeking new partners and potential funding opportunities.
