From Participation to Empowerment – Making It Happen
Community participation is a core principle of development work, but the development community needs to start asking itself some hard questions about just how empowering their work truly is. Our lead discussant, Dr. Susan Rifkin, brings 40 years of international development, public health, and academic experience. She’ll share a case study of empowering work with community health workers in Iran, highlighting the use of three visualization tools: mapping, prioritization matrix, and a visioning matrix. Then, she’ll engage the group in some reflection about the participatory nature of their own work and opportunities to really move towards empowerment.
