What Does #ShiftThePower and Community Philanthropy Mean for Alternative Resource Mobilization?

Background:

The #ShiftThePower movement emerged as a result of frustration with the current top-down structures of development aid delivering long-term results. What started as a hashtag to promote the 2016 Global Summit on Community Foundations by the Global Fund for Community Foundations,

#ShiftThePower offers up new ways of deciding and doing together, consisting of a global community of practitioners and emerging practice that is people-centered and local assets based.

#ShiftThePower seeks to reform the practice of development aid and institutional philanthropy and demand better for local people by engaging them as co-investors in and owners of their development.

In this workshop, we will hear from the Global Fund for Community Foundations on how #ShiftThePower works in practice, how local communities are taking ownership of their own development, and how community philanthropy can be used as an alternative strategy for building durable development and resource mobilization.

Speakers:

Ese Emerhi, Global Fund for Community Foundations

Ese is the Global Network Weaver for the Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF). In her role, she works with and helps to strengthen connections across GFCF’s global network of community philanthropy and civil society partners. She also works with allies in the #shiftthepower movement around shaping broader advocacy, influencing, and engagement efforts involving other parts of the mainstream development sector.

Artemisa Castro, Fondo Acción Solidaria, A.C.
Artemisa Castro, PhD. is the Executive Director of FASOL, based in Mexico. She has worked as a scientist on marine resource management research for the last 30 years, and all her work had been focused on the Sea of Cortez area. Working close to the fishermen gave Artemisa the possibility to have a better understanding of the relationships between natural resources, the environment, the users and resources management problems. At the same time, she addressed her research efforts on the natural and social environmental consequences originated by inadequate or lack of proper management strategies and legal controls that can protect the environment and its resources. After beginning her volunteering with the Global Greengrants Fund twenty years ago, the advisory Board became FASOL (Action in Solidarity Fund), with the objective of promoting socio-environmental justice within Mexican funders, supporting grassroots socio-environmental projects. Artemisa has been Executive Director of FASOL since 2007.
Maria Amalia Souza, CASA Socio-Environmental Fund

Maria Amalia Souza is Founder/Strategic Development Director of CASA Socio-Environmental Fund. Her career of 35+ years specialized in designing strategies that assure philanthropic resources reach the most excluded grassroots groups working on social and environmental justice issues in the Global South. She is part of Human Rights Funders Network Steering Committee and co-founder of the Brazil Philanthropy Network for Social Justice. In 2016, Amalia was shortlisted for the Olga  Alexeeva Memorial Prize on Innovative Philanthropy in the Global South. Amalia has mentored 7 new Global South national funds to be implemented in the last 4 years and also writes articles and blogs for specialized philanthropic publications as Alliance Magazine, WINGS Worldwide Initiative for Grantmakers Support, among others.
