Understanding the Refugee Experience

On January 28th, the United Nations Association Denver kicked off hosting the 3rd Annual UNAFF Traveling International Documentary Film Festival with an evening at the Posner Center. Each year during the festival community partners in various locations around the country screen selected international documentaries, helping to raise awareness on critical human rights and global development issues.

The timely theme for UNADenver’s opening night reception was Understanding the Refugee Experience. The almost 200 guests in attendance viewed Welcome to Refugeestan, a film that explores the refugee “camp” system that houses 17 million refugees around the world.  Following the film, guests listened to an energetic panel discussion about the complexities of the UNHCR camps,  durable solutions to the refugee crisis and critical issues of resettlement in our own Colorado community. It was a packed house as the community came together to learn, to understand the refugee crisis in context and stand in support of refugees.
